About
Jan Rudolf Czernin and the Fashion of English Landscape Gardens in the Czech Lands
Jan Rudolf Czernin (1757-1845) was among the first aristocrats in the Czech Lands to have
built a landscape park (a designed landscape inspired by English parks and gardens) on his
estate. It can still be visited in Krásný Dvůr near Podbořany in Western Bohemia. During the
lecture we will focus on the origin of this park and we will do so in the Czech and European
context. We will also discuss the inspirational sources that Czernin drew upon during his
travels round parks and gardens of Western Europe, as well as from contemporary literature
and models.
Markéta Šantrůčková (Silva Tarouca Research Institute for Landscape and Ornamental
Gardening, Průhonice)
The lecture will take place on the occasion of the publication of the book “Jan Rudolf Černín
a jeho Krásný Dvůr: Krajinářský park v Čechách v ohnisku vlivů a cestovních inspirací
1770–1830. Praha 2023”, and will be given in Czech.
Prokop Vojtěch Czernin and Prague Theatre in the 1770s
Although Prokop Vojtěch Černín (1726-1777) did not obtain any important official dignity, he
left an enduring mark on the cultural history of the Kingdom of Bohemia. In Southern
Bohemia he is still commemorated by his favorite residence in Jemčina, and he is known as a
supporter and organizer in the field of theatre and performance. During the lecture, we will
deepen our knowledge of this still-under-researched member of the family. It has recently
come out that his long-standing poor financial situation did not prevent him from building
activities and from supporting the theatre Kotce in Prague, where he promoted
performances in the German language.
Jiří Kubeš (University of Pardubice)
(The lecture will be given in Czech.)
